Candle care tips for a longer burn time and stronger fragrance

Aug 5, 20263 min read

Did you know you can make your candle last longer and increase the strength of the scent? With just a few simple care tips, you can get more hours of burn time and keep your space feeling warm and inviting for longer.

Here are five easy ways to get the most from your candle:

  1. Trim your candle wick

After every burn, trim your wick. As your candle burns and the wick goes further down your container, you may see the wick ‘mushroom’; this is common and occurs when there is a carbon build up on the tip of the wick. To prevent excess soot and larger flames, trim your wick to approximately 5mm and remove the mushroom before every burn.

Note to Self Candles feature self-trimming wicks, making candle care even easier. Before each burn, simply remove the small, brittle tip of the wick with your fingers, no scissors or wick trimmers needed; this helps your candle burn cleanly and evenly every time.

  1. Burn your candle for a minimum of 1.5 hours to create a full melt pool

Allow your candle to melt all the way to the edges during each use. Extinguishing it too soon, typically before 1.5 hours can lead to tunnelling, where the wax melts down the centre and leaves a ring of unused wax around the sides. Over time, this can shorten your candle's burn time, affect its performance, and even cause excess carbon to build up on the wick.

Each Note to Self Candle wick has been carefully tested and selected to ensure an even melt pool for every burn. Ensure you burn your candle for at least 1.5 hours to achieve an even burn, increase longevity and release the fragrance beautifully.

  1. Place your candle on an even surface, away from drafts and flammable objects

Where you place your candle can make a big difference. Keep your candle away from open windows and drafts, as moving air can cause the flame to flicker and burn unevenly. Always place your candle on a flat, even surface so the flame burns safely, helping you enjoy a longer-lasting, more consistent burn.

  1. Don’t burn for over 4 hours

We know that lit candles create a peaceful atmosphere but fight the urge to have it burning for longer than 4 hours, as the container can overheat. Having it burn for over 4 hours can also reduce the overall burn time and create soot, affecting your candle’s longevity.

  1. Keep an eye on the flame

If you think the flame is flickering too much, creating a lot of smoke or becoming too high, extinguish the flame, give it time to cool down, and trim the wick before lighting again. This is natural but can be controlled with trimming the wick to approximately 5mm after every burn.

And that’s it! Follow these five steps when you buy a candle to get the most out of every burn.
